Greg grew up in Central Illinois where he was surrounded by tools and talented craftsmen (his father Jim and brother Dan are both very gifted designers and makers). After breaking most of their tools and projects while wreaking havoc on the small town of Chillicothe, Greg decided he should go wreak havoc on the world.

At 18 years old, he jumped on his motorcycle and headed east to Virginia Beach. There he started his true passion for, and appreciation of, wood. He became a climber for a prominent tree service. Making his way back to Illinois some years later and while attending college, 9/11 happened. The world had changed and he knew he had to change as well. After one of his closest friends was seriously injured in Iraq, Greg decided to do the only thing he thought was right: he enlisted in the Army as a light Infantryman.

Being a few years older than most of the recruits, he excelled in basic training and was lucky enough to get orders to the 101st Airborne, Charlie Co. 2-327INF No Slack Battalion.

There, he forged friendships that will last his lifetime. After four years (2005-2009), two tours, and 27 months of fighting in Iraq, SGT. Miller was honorably discharged. Greg took the lessons he learned and his thirst for peace to Key West, Florida, as a SCUBA instructor. A few years later he moved to Boston. While studying history and philosophy at the University of UMASS Boston, he was lucky enough to teach the SCUBA program at M.I.T.

Greg then moved back to Key West where he started a career in marina management with the help and guidance of the Spottswood family.

Todd Manual, a local business man, pilot, and extremely talented cabinet maker decided to take Greg under his wings and let him break all of his tools until he learned how to use them (there’s still debate about that…)

At the end of 2021, Greg sold his 1978 45’ Morgan Ketch sailboat, packed his tools up and headed to the Ozarks to help his parents and start a new chapter.

Greg met local author and community advocate Joshua Heston, editor-in-chief of State of the Ozarks. Josh and his tribe of misfit makers convinced Greg to set up a booth at SOTO Fest 2022 where he had an incredible experience and decided to buy property, set up shop and move full steam ahead with his woodcraft. This is how GTM Woodcraft was born.
